Jake: Hey I’m Jake of Body by Jake and welcome to the motivational minute. We’re here at Chase Field, Ken Crenshaw is here.
Let’s talk about kids! Coaches want a kid to play only one sport. They talk about play as many as you can, but they want that one sport. What do you think about that? What do you recommend there?
Ken: Okay. Well I’m highly opposed to it! I just see so many kids with, you know, overuse injuries from baseball. Particularly here in Arizona because we can play all year round. So I’m a big advocate of multiple sports, as long as they can play
I feel like every parent feels like they’re getting behind if their kid’s not specializing in one sport. You know, actually, if you look at the research, it’s quite the opposite.
The kids that are better, they do multiple sports and why is that? I think you just developed the athlete, you develop movement skills, you develop different things that are going to be used in their sport anyway, so it’s really important to develop all those skills.
Jake: If there was one thing that you could recommend to a young athlete, who you know, mom or dad is gonna say “we need to watch this because we recognize Ken” what would that one or two things be? You know, for this athlete to become not only a better athlete but a more well-rounded person?
Ken: I really think, you know, putting them in again, go back to multiple sports. I love soccer, I think it’s a really great developmental sport that’s important.
But I think if we really look at our society as a whole, you know we’re struggling with a lot of health issues and nutrition is really the foundation that we’re missing. We got to make sure that we’re on that.
Jake: Perfect! Okay, well done!
