Life-Changing Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

Both bridges and crowns make use of prosthetic devices to restore or create a stellar smile. For most patients who visit Brilliant Dentistry, a dental crown is utilized when a tooth is damaged or fractured, while a dental bridge is placed when one or more than one tooth is missing.

At your first appointment, Dr. Bril and his team will collect a complete medical and dental history, and they will then perform a thorough examination using the most advanced dental technology available today. After all of this information is evaluated, Dr. Bril will know exactly what dentistry procedure (or procedures) will produce the best result for you.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth replacement or “cap” usually made of porcelain or ceramic or some combination of those materials. Dental crowns are custom-made to match your existing tooth, and they will look exactly like your tooth. No one will know you have a crown unless you tell them. The color and texture of dental crowns are easily matched to the existing teeth.

In many cases, crowns are the preferred dentistry procedure when an existing tooth is chipped, broken, or fractured. The crown process requires the tooth to be reshaped into a smaller size; Dr. Bril uses amazing  technology to achieve this. Any tooth decay is then removed from the surface of the tooth, and the structure is restored so it can support the dental crown that’s placed atop the tooth. After the crown is placed on the surface of the tooth, it is cemented into position. It acts as a cap for the tooth and improves the tooth’s strength and durability.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a prosthetic that is used in patients who are missing a tooth. Bridges are made up of porcelain and are fused to metal to improve both the functionality of the tooth and the aesthetics of the tooth.

A bridge comprises false teeth that are firmly situated between two dental crowns. The teeth on the sides of the gap must be prepared so the dental bridge can easily be placed. In some cases, dental implants are used to replace the missing teeth rather than the existing teeth. When a dental bridge is in place, it functions just like your natural teeth, ensuring a strong bite and a great-looking tooth. Since every patient’s dental situation is different, Dr. Bril will explain your process every step of the way.

What Does a Crown Fix?

The most common problems that dental crowns fix are:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Stained teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Tooth decay

What Does a Dental Bridge Fix?

Dental bridges are used to fix the problem of missing teeth (or a single missing tooth). Missing teeth often result from:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Injury
  • Birth defects

Inlays and Onlays

Some dental problems require a little something different than what dental crowns and bridges accomplish. In those cases, an inlay or an onlay may be indicated. Inlays fill in cavities in the areas between the cusps of the tooth. Onlays will fill cavities and a larger area than inlays are able to fill. Onlays work very similarly to dental crowns but don’t cover the entire surface of the tooth as a crown does. Simply put, Inlays and onlays are made from the same materials and have the same function; the difference lies in what areas of the tooth they cover. Dr. Bril will explain to you which procedure is best for your particular situation.
